LUPUS ANTICOAGULANT BLOOD TEST

Despite its name, lupus anticoagulant has nothing to do with lupus the autoimmune disease in all cases, nor does it act as an anticoagulant in the body, in fact, it’s associated with an increased risk of thrombosis (blood clots).

These antibodies interfere with normal blood clotting processes and may be found in people with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), recurrent miscarriages, or unexplained blood clots.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

From a GP’s perspective, the Lupus Anticoagulant blood test is a valuable tool when investigating unexplained blood clots, recurrent miscarriages, or symptoms suggestive of an underlying autoimmune condition.

While the name can be misleading, this test isn’t just related to lupus, it detects antibodies that interfere with normal clotting and may significantly raise the risk of thrombosis.

Clinic appointment - how to prepare for the Lupus Anti Coagulation Blood Test

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Read the instructions in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section
  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit - how it works with the Lupus Anti Coagulation Blood Test

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Lupus Anti Coagulation Blood Test.

Does a positive lupus anticoagulant test mean I have lupus?

Not necessarily. Despite the name, the lupus anticoagulant is not specific to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It refers to a type of antibody that affects blood clotting.

While it can be found in people with lupus, it’s also present in other autoimmune conditions or even temporarily after infections. A positive result doesn’t automatically mean you have lupus.

Can I have a normal clotting history and still test positive?

Yes, some people may have lupus anticoagulant antibodies without ever experiencing a blood clot. However, the presence of these antibodies increases the risk, especially in combination with other risk factors. Testing helps identify people who may benefit from closer monitoring or preventative treatment.

Why do I need the test repeated after 12 weeks?

Lupus anticoagulant antibodies can sometimes appear temporarily, especially after infections or certain medications. To confirm a true diagnosis of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), guidelines recommend a second positive result at least 12 weeks after the first. This ensures that the antibodies are persistently present and not just a temporary response.

WHY HAVE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY HAVE THE LUPUS ANTI COAGULATION BLOOD TEST?

The Lupus Anticoagulant blood test is important because it helps identify individuals at increased risk of developing dangerous blood clots, which can lead to conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), stroke, pulmonary embolism, or recurrent miscarriage.

The presence of lupus anticoagulant antibodies can signal an underlying condition called antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), an autoimmune disorder that affects the body’s ability to regulate blood clotting.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE LUPUS ANTI COAGULATION BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

This test is useful if you have a history of unexplained deep vein thrombosis (DVT), stroke, or pregnancy loss, particularly in younger individuals or those without clear risk factors.

It is also used in diagnosing autoimmune conditions that affect clotting.
