Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Unexplained Abdominal Symptoms

Dr Mike Forsythe on Hair Loss and Its Causes

A few months ago, a male patient of mine proudly declared that he believed there to be only 3 certainties in life; death, taxes and losing one’s hair. He had made his peace with his new found baldness, but for many people hair loss can be very distressing.

Dr. Mike Forsythe on Erectile Dysfunction

There are many euphemisms for erectile dysfunction - ‘I can’t get it up, doc’, or ‘it’s stopped working down there’ - this is because the problem is both difficult to talk about and extremely common. So what exactly is Erectile Dysfunction? And perhaps...

    Understanding Cardiac Risk

The British Heart Foundation collates some very frightening statistics about heart disease. In the UK a heart attack occurs about every 5 minutes. Over seven and half million of us are living with heart or circulatory disease, causing a quarter of all deaths which equates to about a death every 3 minutes. It is a massive issue, both for individuals and for our health as a population.

Chronic Kidney Disease: What Does it Mean for Me?

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a frightening term. The idea of a chronic disease attacking your vital organs is very unsettling, but CKD is actually very common. Around 3 million people in the UK are estimated to be suffering from it and many of these people will have no idea that there is a problem.

    Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Unexplained Exhaustion

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), sometimes also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is a condition of exhaustion without an obvious medical explanation. Tired All the Time? Causes of fatigue, diagnostics blood tests and treatment.

The complaint of feeling tired all the time is unfortunately very common. It is so common in fact that, if I type the letters TATT into my system at work, the computer will automatically convert this to read ‘tired all the time’. It is a pervasive and sometimes debilitating complaint that may have a serious underlying cause or may have no obvious cause at all.

    Anaemia: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

People with anaemia suffer with shortness of breath, tiredness, weakness, lightheadedness and, in severe cases, chest pain because the heart itself is not getting enough oxygen. Sufferers may also be pale because they lack the haemoglobin that gives them a healthy colour.

    The Thyroid: Metabolic Command Centre

The thyroid gland sits at the front of the neck and is often described as ‘butterfly shaped’. This little gland is incredibly important. By secreting two hormones into the bloodstream, the thyroid effectively controls our metabolism. Because of this important role, if the thyroid gland isn’t working properly, the consequences can be very wide ranging.

Fatty Liver Disease: A Silent Pandemic and the liver function blood tests

In Fatty Liver Disease, fat builds up in the liver in the same way as fat builds up elsewhere in the body. This can affect liver function and Fatty Liver Disease is the most common cause of abnormal liver function tests. For many people the condition may remain stable and may cause no symptoms but, in a minority of people, inflammation of the liver develops, and this can progress to cirrhosis (permanent scarring of the liver), liver failure, liver cancer, and eventually death.
