About the test

The HIV antibody tests checks for the immune response to an HIV infection. It checks for HIV 1 (which is found world wide) and HIV 2 (which is predominantly found in West Africa). Because there is a delay between infection and the development of antibodies, if infection has occurred recently, the test may still be negative. This is referred to as the ‘window period’ and can last up to 90 days. It is therefore often recommended that, if you believe you have been exposed to HIV but the test is negative, you repeat the test after 90 days.

The P24 test actually tests for a protein produced by the HIV virus. This can usually be detected before the antibodies are produced (usually 2-3 weeks after infection) and can therefore allow for earlier detection. The protein disappears from the blood once antibodies are produced and therefore the test becomes negative (usually after 1 – 2 months).

This test is often referred to as a "fourth-generation" HIV test because it can detect both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen, making it more sensitive and capable of detecting the virus earlier than previous tests.

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

Home test kit for HIV Antibodies 1 & 2 with P24 Antigen Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

What are the components of the HIV 1 and 2 with P24 blood test?

HIV-1: The most common strain of the virus worldwide.

HIV-2: Less common, mostly found in West Africa but can also be present in other regions.

The test detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to these viruses. Antibodies typically take a few weeks to develop after infection, so this component of the test is more useful in detecting established infections.

p24 Antigen:

The p24 antigen is a protein that makes up part of the HIV virus itself. It can be detected in the blood much earlier than antibodies, usually within 2-4 weeks after exposure to the virus. The presence of p24 indicates an active HIV infection before the body has had time to produce detectable levels of antibodies.

How do you interpret HIV 1 and 2 and P24 results?

  • Negative: No HIV-1/2 antibodies or p24 antigen detected. If the test was done within the window period, a follow-up test might be recommended.
  • Positive: HIV-1/2 antibodies or p24 antigen detected, indicating a likely HIV infection.

WHY TAKE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY TAKE THE HIV ANTIBODIES 1 & 2 WITH P24 ANTIGEN BLOOD TEST?

The "window period" is the time between potential exposure to HIV and the point when the test can reliably detect the virus. Fourth-generation tests significantly reduce this window period compared to older tests that only detect antibodies.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE HIV ANTIBODIES 1 & 2 WITH P24 ANTIGEN BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

By testing for both HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies as well as the p24 antigen, the test provides a comprehensive approach to HIV screening, increasing the likelihood of detecting the virus at different stages of infection.
