FASTING GLUCOSE BLOOD TEST

Fasting Blood Glucose is a straightforward and widely used blood test to screen for diabetes, prediabetes, or gestational diabetes during pregnancy.

A fasting blood glucose test measures the level of glucose in your blood at its lowest point, after you haven't eaten or drunk anything for 12 hours.

Glucose is a form of sugar and serves as the primary energy source for your body. Insulin assists in transporting glucose from your bloodstream into your cells.

An imbalance in blood glucose levels, whether too high or too low, can indicate a medical issue. Elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) may signal diabetes, a condition that can lead to long-term health problems if not treated.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

Glucose is the body’s primary energy source and a critical component of normal metabolic function.

After carbohydrates from food are broken down in the digestive tract, glucose enters the bloodstream and is transported to cells throughout the body.

Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, regulates how effectively cells take in glucose, i.e. in the presence of adequate insulin, glucose is used or stored for later energy needs.

Imbalances in glucose levels, whether consistently high (hyperglycemia) or low (hypoglycemia), can disrupt normal body processes, leading to health conditions such as diabetes.

Maintaining healthy glucose levels is crucial for optimal organ function, stable energy levels, and overall metabolic well-being.

Red flag symptoms for the Fasting Glucose Blood Test

Common symptoms of hyperglycemia include increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, and fatigue.

Over time, consistently elevated blood sugar can lead to complications like nerve damage, kidney issues, and cardiovascular disease.

Meanwhile, hypoglycemia often presents with dizziness, shakiness, sweating, and irritability, reflecting the brain and body’s urgent need for glucose.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, or any other persistent symptoms, you should speak to your GP.

Home test kit - how it works with the Fasting Glucose Blood Test

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!
