This test is instrumental in detecting or excluding anaemia as well as offering insights into immune system health. FBC abnormalities may signal abdominal conditions like coeliac disease or pernicious anaemia, affecting nutrient absorption, or indicate internal bleeding from gastritis, ulcers, or serious concerns like bowel cancer. We also check iron, vitamin B12, and folate levels, low levels of which might underlie abnormalities in the FBC.

Kidney function tests are essential, given the kidneys' role in waste filtration, electrolyte balance, and blood pressure regulation. Symptoms such as nausea or loss of appetite can hint at kidney disease, highlighting the test's relevance in diagnosing abdominal issues.

Liver health is gauged through enzyme levels, reflecting its critical functions in digestion, waste processing, and more. There are a number of different categories of immunoglobulins and we test for three particular categories – IgA, IgG, and IgM. Each type of immunoglobulin performs a slightly different role.

IgA antibodies are found in blood, saliva, respiratory secretions, and the fluid in your stomach. They are important in defending the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts against infection. IgG antibodies are the most common immunoglobulin in blood and help fight against viral and bacterial infections. They also form part of the immune system’s ‘memory’ and are very important in the body’s response to infections that it has encountered before. IgM antibodies are produced as part of the body’s initial response to infection, so levels of IgM rise at the start of an infection.

40 BIOMARKERS

FULL BLOOD COUNT

- White Blood Cell Count (WBC)
- Red Blood Cell Count (RBC)
- Haemoglobin (HGB)
- Hematocrit (HCT)
- Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV)
- Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin (MCH)
- Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC)
- Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW)
- Platelets* (PLT)
- Mean Platelet Volume* (MPV)
- Lymphocytes* (LYM)
- Monocytes* (MON)
- Neutrophils* (NEU)
- Eosinophils* (EOS)
- Basophils* (BAS)

EXCLUSIONS *

Markers with *symbol are not reported in Capillary/Home kit samples.

Platelets (PLT) - may not be reported in capillary samples if clots are present.

Potassium is not reported in capillary samples. Weight gain, or difficulty losing weight, is a very common symptom of an underactive thyroid, often alongside symptoms such as tiredness, low mood, and feeling cold all the time.

We test several different hormones to test the health of the thyroid, and these can be interpreted together to tell us where the problem lies.

Liver function

We test for liver disease in the weight gain screen because liver disease can cause abdominal swelling due to fluid build-up in the abdominal cavity. This is quite a late sign of liver disease but, if you are gaining weight, it is worth checking liver function in any case to make sure you are not developing fatty liver disease.

To test liver function, we test for a number of the enzymes that the liver produces as well as the waste product bilirubin and the protein albumin. These enzymes tend to rise for different reasons and interpreting the pattern in which they have risen helps us to work out what might be wrong with the liver.

Kidney (renal) function

Kidney disease is actually very common, in fact a degree of reduced kidney function might be considered a normal part of aging for many people. But the kidneys can also be damaged by toxins, medicines, infections, autoimmune conditions, and other conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Like liver disease, kidney disease does not cause weight gain, but it can cause swelling that mimics weight gain. Kidney disease may cause swelling around the ankles, eyes, and abdomen in particular.

Sometimes this is because damaged kidneys leak the protein albumin (which is tested as part of liver function). If blood albumin levels are low, this causes fluid to leak out of the blood vessels and into the tissues which causes the abnormal swelling.

We calculate kidney function using an equation based on the levels of the waste product creatinine (which is produced from normal muscle breakdown), your age, and your sex. An adjustment is also often made for your race. This gives the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) which is essentially a score of how well your kidneys are functioning. Kidney disease may cause swelling around the ankles, eyes, and abdomen in particular.

Sometimes this is because damaged kidneys leak the protein albumin (which is tested as part of liver function). Because acne treatments such as Accutane/Roaccutane can place additional strain on the liver, measuring liver enzymes like ALT and AST is critical. Elevated levels may indicate stress or damage, prompting your doctor to adjust the medication dosage or, in some cases, pause treatment to allow the liver to recover.

Another key element involves Urea & Electrolytes (U&Es) and a Full Blood Count (FBC). The U&Es panel measures kidney function and electrolyte balance by checking sodium, potassium, and creatinine levels. Meanwhile, the FBC tracks important blood cell counts, including red and white blood cells, as well as platelets. Monitoring these values helps ensure your kidneys continue to function properly and that your body has adequate blood cell levels to maintain a robust immune system during Accutane therapy.

Lastly, lipid testing evaluates cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which can sometimes rise when taking Accutane. Keeping an eye on these lipid values enables healthcare providers to gauge cardiovascular risk and intervene if levels begin to climb outside of the healthy range.
